No Nukes

I haven’t listened to a record for a while and I feel like I’ve strayed from the original plan I had. However, today I will be listening to an album. In fact, this album is a collaboration between some of the most influential musicians of the 70’s.

This album, No Nukes: The Muse Concerts For a Non-Nuclear Future, was released as a triple live album in 1979 and contains music from the No Nukes Festival that happened in Madison Square Garden. The event was organized by an organization called MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), which was founded by Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, and John Hall. The album itself includes music from groups and solo artists such as James Taylor, The Doobie Brothers, Jackson Browne, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Crosby, Stills, & Nash.

Just last year on August 7th, MUSE had another concert to reunite many of the musicians from the 1979 No Nukes show including all of the founders of MUSE. Held in Mountain View, CA, at the Shoreline Amphitheater, this show also included artists such as Jason Mraz and Tom Morollo from Rage Against the Machine.

One reasons I love this album is because I like how famous musicians perform together. It’s amazing enough to see one of your favorite artists in concert, but to be able to see many of your favorites at one show is out of this world.

What are some of your favorite artists? Have you ever seen any of these artists play together? If you could see any collaboration of musicians, who would it be? Comment below!

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

So as I mentioned Tuesday, The Red Hot Chili Peppers were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 14, 2012. Along with RHCP, other bands such as The Beastie Boys, and Guns N’ Roses were inducted as well.

To celebrate this achievement, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have recently released an album consisting of six covers by other Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members. This album is called Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Covers EP and includes songs by The Ramones, David Bowie, and Neil Young.

I was stoked when I found out that RHCP was covering a song by Neil Young! This song, “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”, was released in 1969 and was Young’s second studio album. (Fun Fact: “Cinnamon Girl”, “Down by the River”, and “Cowgirl in the Sand” were all written for this album while Young had 103° F fever). Neil Young has been inducted into The Rock and Roll hall of Fame twice; once in ’95 for his solo career, and again in ’97 for Buffalo Springfield.

Almost all of the most famous bands and solo artists in history have been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some musicians have even been inducted more than once! Neil Young has been inducted twice; once in ’95 for his solo career, and again in ’97 for Buffalo Springfield. Other artists to have been inducted more than once include: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Paul Simon. Eric Clapton is the only person who has been inducted three times.

What do you think about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Who are some of your favorite artists who have been inducted? Is there anyone who you think should be inducted? Comment below!

The Woodstock FestivalThe Woodstock Festival

This week I will be sharing about the wondrous and wicked awesome world of Woodstock. To introduce this solid ’60’s concert, I’d thought I’d tell you a little bit about the hangin’ history of Woodstock.

On August 15 to August 18 in 1969, half a million people gathered in Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in the town of Bethel (outside of White Lake, New York) to enjoy the Woodstock Music Festival. The Woodstock Festival was created by John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld, and Mike Lang in hopes that it would help to pay for a recording studio in Woodstock, New York.

After trouble with finding a suitable location for the event to take place, Max Yasgur volunteered his dairy farm for the festival to use. Even with this sudden stroke of luck, the festival was far behind schedule. Although the estimated amount of people expected to attend was about 50,000, the estimate quickly jumped to around 200,000.

When August 15 finally arrived, there were already 50,000 people camped out by the stage, none of whom had tickets. It was then announced that Woodstock was to be a free concert. As news spread about the free concert, about a million people headed to Bethel, New York. Thousands of cars were turned away by the police. The organizers were forced to hire helicopters to take the performers to the show.

Some of the most famous artists in the world performed at Woodstock including Santana, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and Jimi Hendrix, to name a few.

With performances from some of the most famous bands in history, Woodstock went down as the greatest music event in history.

What are your experiences involving Woodstock? Did you or anyone you know attend? Comment below!

Today, I decided to change things up from the usual record review that I usually do. Unlike my normal album analysis, I decided to tell you about my top ten favorite classic rock artists of all time.

1. The Beatles: As I have mentioned before, I am a big Beatles fanatic. I love their distinct sound and how you can recognize a Beatles song within the first few seconds of the song. “All you need is love”

2. Grateful Dead: My parents were pretty big Dead Heads when they were younger so my Dad has lots of records by the Grateful Dead. One thing I like about their music is how they would have a different set list for each show. I also love the way that they have super long jam sessions during their songs. You can really tell they loved what they did.”Come hear Uncle John’s Band by the riverside”

3. CSNY: One of the best super-groups of all time, CSNY is made up of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young. Their trademark has to be their amazing vocal harmonies in songs such as “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”. With some of my favorite artists in one musical group, this band is awesome! “I am yours, you are mine; You are what you are”

4. Led Zeppelin: Most famous for their hit “Stairway to Heaven” but also for their amazing guitar licks and stage presence. I find it amazing that they were able to write one of the best songs of all time, as well as many other hits such as “Black Dog” and “Whole Lotta Love” “There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold; And she’s buying a stairway to heaven”

5. The Rolling Stones: As part of the British Invasion, The Rolling Stones had a string of eight consecutive studio albums reaching number one in the United States. Frontman Mick Jagger’s distinctive voice and performance and Keith Richards’ guitar style became The Rolling Stone’s trademark throughout their career. “I know it’s only rock and roll but I like it”

6. Pink Floyd: As one of the most commercially successful and influential rock music groups of all time, Pink Floyd is known for their Psychedelic Rock music and philosophical lyrics. We’re just two lost soulsSwimming in a fish bowl”

7. Aerosmith: Sometimes referred to as  “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band”, Aerosmith’s style was rooted in blues-based hard rock and has  inspired many subsequent rock artists. I am particularly fond of one of their most famous songs “Dream On”, was their best charting single of the 1970s. “Dream on, dream on, dream on; dream until your dreams come true”

8. Santana: Founded by Mexican Rock guitarist Carlos Santana, this band helped to pioneer rock, salsa and jazz fusion. I really like how Santana includes Latin American instruments such as congas which are not usually heard in rock songs. I especially like their songs “Oye Como Va” and “Smooth”. “You got the kind of lovin’ that can be so smooth; Gimme your heart, make it real, or else forget about it”

9. Eagles: The Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s and had one of the best selling albums of all time with their album “Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)” which sold over 40 million copies. I love their hits “Hotel California” and “Take it Easy”. “Welcome to the Hotel California”

10. Nirvana: Nirvana found unexpected success from their hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit” off of their first album “Nevermind”. This album widely popularized their band, as well as alternative rock as a whole. “I feel stupid and contagious; Here we are now, entertain us”

What are your favorite bands? How do they compare to mine? Comment below and share your story.

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young

Today, I placed a record on a turntable for the first time. It was cool to learn how to do it since I remember seeing my Dad do it when I was younger. There is a lot of technique needed in order to make the record play properly. First of all, you must handle the record with delicate hands and only touch the edges of the record itself. Also, you should always handle the needle with care and gently place it on the surface of the record where the first groove begins. I find a record to be a marvelous method of playing music. This is the way we were meant to listen to music.

For my first album, I decided to listen to Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. This was the first album CSNY released. With David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young, this band was known as a “supergroup” because they had all had hits with their earlier bands (Crosby with the Byrds, Stills and Young with Buffalo Springfield, and Nash with The Hollies). They were known to some as “The American Beatles”.

As the needle moved across each groove on the record, I could hear each rhythm, each melody, each harmony, as if it was playing alone. It was amazing to hear the harmonies sung by this group for each melody complemented the others perfectly. Although there were a few crackles and snaps every once in a while, it created a sense of authenticity. It was as if I had stepped back into 1970 and was listening to the record like a newly released record.
